Biography
Marija Krstevski, born on May 12, 1996, in Pančevo, where she currently lives and works. She graduated from the Image Media program at the College of Fine and Applied Arts in Belgrade. She completed her master’s studies in 2023 at the same institution, in the Audiovisual Compositions program, defending her thesis titled “The Melancholy of the Journey of Self-Discovery of a Harlequin.” She actively engages with various traditional and contemporary media of visual art.
As someone whose primary need is to decipher her own thoughts through the tools of visual art, she uses her personal experiences as the foundation for creation, striving for universality. Her professional artistic orientation was preceded by years of searching for beauty through collecting. Over time, she came to understand that all those objects of admiration functioned as a means of transforming her personal world, serving primarily as aesthetic mediums while disregarding their practical value. Thus, they become part of an authorial microcosm, tools for collaging reality—whether as parts of a scenography or, often, as main protagonists.
The knowledge accumulated during her education expanded the horizons of possibilities for creating phantasmagorical spaces where the artist places her visions. Digital photography and digital video have proven to be dominant means of illuminating hidden corners of the psyche, attempting in this way to explain the world to herself and herself to the world. Her video works often include narrations in the form of short poetic texts, written at the moment of the idea’s conception and the need to put it on paper. The very process of creation and the excitement it evokes reveal that her ultimate intent is always a confession of herself and the world, prioritizing artistic expression over practical considerations.
